Question 1

What does a lighting audit involve?

Accepted Answer

A lighting audit involves on-site measurement of lighting performance to verify compliance with design intent and applicable Australian Standards. This typically includes establishing a measurement grid, recording lux levels using calibrated instruments, assessing uniformity and distribution, and comparing results against standards such as AS/NZS 1158 and AS/NZS 2560.2. Findings are documented in a structured report suitable for council submissions and compliance verification.

Question 2

When is a lighting audit required for council approval?

Accepted Answer

Lighting audits are typically required where a planning permit condition calls for verification of installed lighting performance. This is common for sports lighting, public spaces, car parks and illuminated signage where councils require evidence that lighting levels, spill and overall performance meet approved criteria. Audits are also used post-installation to confirm compliance or to address complaints and disputes.

Question 3

What is the difference between a lighting audit and a lighting compliance report?

Accepted Answer

A lighting audit refers to the on-site measurement and assessment process, while a lighting compliance report is the documented outcome of that process. The audit generates the data - including lux levels, uniformity and observations - and the report presents those results in a structured format, referencing the relevant standards and confirming whether the installation meets the required criteria.

Question 4

How long does a lighting audit and report take?

Accepted Answer

On-site lighting audits are typically completed within one to six hours depending on the size and complexity of the site. The compliance report is generally issued within five business days of testing, provided site conditions are suitable and all required information is available. Urgent projects can be prioritised where required for council submission deadlines.

Question 5

Can a lighting audit be done during the day?

Accepted Answer

Not for outdoor lighting, because daylight swamps the readings, so testing is done after dark. Interior audits can be done during the day if daylight is excluded. Otherwise they are also done at night.

Question 6

Does new lighting need an audit if the design was compliant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if a permit condition, sporting body or contract requires verification. A compliant design predicts performance; it does not prove it. Aiming, mounting heights and product substitutions on site often change the result.

Question 7

Can a neighbour commission a lighting audit?

Accepted Answer

Yes. An independent audit can be commissioned by the affected resident, the lighting owner or the council. Measurements are taken at the affected property, and the findings stand on the data, whoever commissioned them.
