A Little About Us

Spaces At Night is a Melbourne-based lighting consultancy specialising in lighting impact assessments, lux testing and lighting compliance reporting for public, commercial and sporting environments across Victoria.

Led by an IESANZ Member (MIES), our work is grounded in recognised industry standards and best practice lighting design principles. We align our assessments with Australian Standards and international guidance from organisations such as the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), IALD and DarkSky International.

We work with town planners, local councils, contractors, architects and asset managers to deliver safe, efficient and compliant lighting outcomes. Covering areas such as sports fields, illuminated signage installations and commercial spaces, we provide the testing and documentation required to demonstrate conformance with Australian lighting standards.

As lighting consultants, our role is to provide expert guidance, accurate reporting and practical solutions – helping your project move smoothly from planning to approval.

When
When Do You Need a Lighting Consultant?

A lighting consultant brings independent technical expertise to ensure your project meets safety, performance and compliance requirements. Unlike suppliers or installers, we focus solely on design, audits and testing – providing unbiased advice that prevents costly mistakes.

From council approvals to detailed lux testing, a lighting consultant ensures your lighting system aligns with Australian Standards and achieves the required outcomes without delays. Whether it’s a sports field, public space or electronic advertising displays, working with a consultant provides confidence that your installation is compliant, efficient and built to last.

We also support projects requiring DTP, CASA and VEU documentation, delivering clear evidence-based reports for planning and regulatory submissions.

Who
What is a Lighting Consultant?

A lighting consultant is typically engaged when a project requires independent, evidence-based documentation that a supplier or installer cannot provide. The most common triggers are a planning permit condition requiring a lighting compliance report, a council submission that needs lux contour plots certified by a qualified consultant, a post-installation audit to verify that lighting performs within approved limits, or a dispute requiring an expert witness report.

For commercial developments, sports facilities and illuminated signage, Victorian councils routinely require lighting documentation as a condition of planning approval. Submitting an incomplete or non-compliant report is one of the most common causes of permit delays – and one of the most avoidable.

What
What Does Independent Mean in Practice?

Unlike a lighting supplier or installer, an independent lighting consultant has no financial interest in the products specified or installed. Every assessment Spaces at Night produces is based solely on calibrated on-site testing and photometric modelling against Australian Standards – not on what product a supplier wants to move. This matters to councils and planning authorities, who rely on the impartiality of the report to make approval decisions.

How
How Long Does a Lighting Compliance Report Take?

For most projects, a pre-installation compliance assessment or photometric report is completed within three to five business days of receiving the required lighting data. Post-installation lux testing is typically scheduled and completed within one week of site access being available. If your project has a permit deadline, contact us early – we regularly work to tight council submission timeframes across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
